Hardy Climbing Rose
I’ve been burned a lot by the promise of a hardy rose. Aside from rugosa roses, I usually experience some kind of die back on a rose, which isn’t horrible, I just love the look of thick budded canes!
This climber is amazing. Even in the country, and the valley where things are just a little colder, it has canes as tall as me and now, in mid April, it is rich green and full of plump leaf buds all the way to the tips! I can’t say enough wonderful things about this rose. It does have one main bloom than lasts a long time, and I’ve not seen any later blooms on mine, but I don’t do much to it besides a shovel full of compost every year.
And foliage stays good looking too. So far anyway – this is my third year.
And if you are in Viroqua in June there is a house right on E. Decker with two stunning specimens blousing over the gate. It can get 10′ tall so plan for it. The blooms are a range of yellows and apricots, even a little pinkish.
