Gas Plant

You’ve got to be patient with this plant as it’s slow to establish. And it doesn’t like to be moved. But it will live for many many years, and be reliably amazing every year once it starts being so. This variety, which is white, is just as beautiful as can be, very upright and strong stems about 3′ tall.

What makes is a gas plant? Apparently (!) on a certain kind of summer day, it produces enough oil that is can be ignited! Every year Royce would try to light the specimens we had in the display gardens. I’ve never seen a flame, but what does happen is that intense warm sun will push the lemony oil scent into the garden. It’s fabulous.
