False Blue Indigo
This is a substantial anchor in the perennial bed and can stand alone but looks very natural and cottagey mingled around with other early summer flowers like poppies and columbine. This native plant has brilliant blue pea type flowers in May. The foliage looks perfect throughout the rest of the growing season and also makes a great backdrop for other plants.
It doesn’t like to be moved though, if you even can. Maybe the first year, or two, but keep in mind it develops a thick and strong taproot, and might punish you by not blooming for years.
Grows about 3′ tall, maybe a little more. It gets nice seed pods too that hang on through the fall.
