I’m looking out at the snow now, but just days ago it was mitten-less weather. I really love that about Wisconsin. It’s good to ease in to the beauty, and the chores.

What do chores look like for you? I try to do some pruning and cleanup of things that are just too big to wait. Like hydrangea. Goodness- if I have to go another spring looking at old blooms amidst new growth I’ll be pretty sad. I’m happy to get this done!

This contorted hazelnut is one of my most loved plants. I planted this about eight years ago right by the front door. I see it every day and appreciate all its subtle moments.
The only chore related to this plant is pulling off all the morning glory vines that, in their unending power to germinate, I eventually submit to come midsummer and enjoy the blue blooms that open amongst all its twistyness.

This chore still awaits- Miscanthus giganteus (for real that’s the name) grows strong canes well over my head, are mighty useful in the garden, and they last for years. They give a nice rustle in every season.
Commercially it is used for biofuel- it’s substantial! Its patch widens but it is not at all aggressive. It has grown among perennials for almost ten years.

More seed starting here today. I’m really looking forward to moving some of these trays to the greenhouse later this week. No matter how bright the lights are it’s nothing like the light in a greenhouse. For them and me.
How are your gardening plans taking shape on this windy snowy day?
Bareroot trees and shrubs are coming in early April and I’m looking forward to planting some in a newly cleaned up area near the creek that runs through this property. It’s a work in progress and Ben of Old Stone Landscaping has unending ways to make my vision happen.
Enjoy your garden thoughts-
Lisa
